2016 Copa del Rey Final Preview: Sevilla vs Barcelona

The Europa League champions meet the La Liga champions in the final of this year’s Copa del Rey. Vicente Calderon will host this mouth-watering tie on May 22, 2016.

Unai Emery won his third successive Europa League trophy in the Basel final against the Premier League giants Liverpool. Sevilla came back from behind to win 3 – 1, thereby booking themselves a place in next season’s Champions League.

Barcelona clinched the La Liga title on the final day of the season with a victory over Granada. The Catalan giants won five matches in a row in order after three back-to-back defeats in the competition. Luis Enrique’s team finished a point above Real Madrid and three points above Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona are in a much better form than Sevilla ahead of their crucial cup final on Monday. Barca won five of their last six league fixtures in contrast to Sevilla, who lost four and drew one. However, both the sides will be equally motivated after winning major silverwares this past week.

Barcelona are the holders of Copa del Rey trophy and they have appeared in 37 Copa del Rey finals, only two less than rivals Real Madrid. However, they hold the record for most wins (27).

Barcelona beat Sevilla 2 – 1 at Camp Nou in February after suffering a 2 – 1 defeat at Sevilla in the first league meeting in October.

This match will be officiated by referee Del Cerro Grande. These two sides will also meet in 2016 Super Cup.
