Based on the last six games, Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League. Brendan Rodgers’ side have taken an impressive 16 points from a possible 18, drawing only one game. The Reds have been outstanding since losing against Man Utd in December, highlighted by an opportune 2-0 away win over Southampton in their last league game.
Man City were simply outstanding in their last game, slaughtering Newcastle 5-0 in a convincing home victory. The Citizens had the game entirely wrapped up when David Silva scored the fifth goal in the 53rd minute. City then took their foot of the gas and pretty much coasted for the remainder of the game.
Liverpool only held 40% of possession against Southampton last weekend, which would normally have been a major issue for most teams. After being so heavily mismatched in possession, Liverpool managed to score twice from just five attempts on goal, with Philippe Coutinho and then Raheem Sterling contributing the goals.
Man City command the largest share of possession in the league, with the Sky Blues averaging a 59.8% share in each game. City then use their possession well, as evidenced by their status as the joint-best attacking team in the league. Manuel Pellegrini has inspired City to score 56 goals in 26 games, which is the same record as Chelsea.
Liverpool have found a way to register good results, even though they haven’t come close to the attacking heights of last season. However, this could be a big problem for facing the best away team in the league. Although the Reds have not lost since mid-December, they could be due for a loss, as Man City dominate possession and can actually score goals.
