Italian Serie A preview: AC Milan v Fiorentina – San Siro – May 20
Ac Milan are assured of a passage to the next season of the UEFA Europa League having secured a spot in the Top 8 of the Italian Serie A. The Rossoneri are in the 6th position of the table with 61 points and ahead of their weekend rivals, 8th-placed Fiorentina by 4 points. The Florentines were on a roll just a week ago, beating Serie A runners-up Napoli 3-0 and following it up with an impressive 2-3 away win over Genoa. But a shock home defeat to bottom half side Cagliari at the Stadio Artemio Franchi last weekend cost them valuable and easy 3 points and a psychological step-down going into the tough May 20th outing at the San Siro.
The visitors will look to their prime scorer, 22-year old Argentine Giovanni Simeone, to deliver as he did with a splendid hat-trick against Napoli. Fiorentina coach Stefano Pioli will probably stick to his usual 4-2-3-1 formation with Simeone in the role of the lone striker and the likes of Marco Benassi, Riccardo Saponara and Federico Chiesa playing behind him.
AC Milan’s recent form has not been very dissimilar to their Florence-based rivals. After two convincing wins over Bologna and Hellas Verona, the Rossoneri were held to a 1-1 away draw against Atalanta. Not that their position on the table would have changed, being a clear 8 points below their city rivals, 5th-placed Inter-Milan. Coach Gennaro Gattuso is very likely to resort to the attacking 4-3-3 formation with Suso, Nikola Kalinic and Hakan Calhanoglu forming the attacking triumvirate upfront.
AC Milan have been unbeaten in their last 4 encounters with their weekend rivals, having won in two of them and drawn two. The last time Fiorentina won at San Siro was way back in November 2013 and haven’t been able to register a win on their previous three visits to the venue since then. This seems to have played on the minds of the bookmakers who are wagering on a win for the hosts as the odds below suggest.
